In 2005 the US corn harvest amounted to 280 million metric tons - about one half the world total, and nearly all of the world's corn export.
That much corn, if converted to ethanol, would replace only about 12% of our consumption of gasoline.
To continue our present production of food AND replace 10% of our gasoline requirement would require additional land to be put into cultivation approximately equal to HALF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. That would involve enormous amounts of tree clearing, thereby greatly reduce the amount of CO2 reduction, not to mention a huge reduction in wildlife habitat. And, the wood produced by tree clearing would not be needed to build houses since we currently have a surplus of houses.
On the other hand, drilling in a small portion of the
ANWR coastal frozen desert would be environmentlly neutral. There
are very few animals there and the caribou have been shown to like
the heat produced by the drilling and piping of crude oil. Caribou populations
have about trippled in the North Slope area (since drilling started)- contrary
to what the enviros predicted.

Biofuels still create CO2 just like the oil extracted from the ground. So, the stupidity of not extracting our own oil (while we develop new energy sources) boggles the mind. So, howcome we voted to keep the same people in congress who put us in this silly and dangerous position and are pledged to dig us deeper into this hole? Well, I didn't.
