A letter to the editor from Don Albright - PDN won't publish

Hope you could post this as the news media is campaining for the levy and restricts what is published......please

NIX SCHOOL LEVY.... EXERCISE BETTER ALTERNATIVESThe school district wants taxpayers blank check for a 22% increase over four years, no deliverables, just spending without oversight. It's bad policy, endorsing a 4-year levy cycle sets a dangerous precedent that's unlikely to sunset, it also leaves open the possibility for special initiatives within the 4 year period further escalating costs.John T. Wenders professor of economics states"public education wastes a minimum of 36% of there expenditures" that should infuriate every Sequim taxpayers. The U.S. public education wastes around 141 billion dollars annually or 1.4% of the gross national product. Most waste in public education is attributed to excessive labor costs, school employment growth out paces student growth by 2:1.  Public schools have become job programs rather than educational institutions.Time to remind the school district that removing  inefficiencies is there responsibility as millions  can be saved without laying off teachers. For starters lets address these issues.ENFORCE.. on time graduation of all students, demand achievement provides direct savings.KILL.... million dollar bus barn proposal its a porker (alternatives abound)OUTSOURCE....all non instructional services including, maintence, transportation, food service, computer & information technology. (Very significant savings opportunity)ELIMINATE.. layers of support services.REDUCE...over emphasis on sports programs and coaching staff.CUT ...discretionary programs and associated budgets, including PR spending.RESTRUCTURE...special education according to the U.S. Supreme court ruling shifting burden to parents.EMPLOY...information technology to reduce administration costs/staff. Maximize staff productivity.A $21 million dollar school budget and a 22% levy is excessive !!!  Restructuring schools bureaucratic operations improves fiscal responsibilities thus permitting the school to concentrate on there primary mission to provide world class education to our community.Don Albright Sequim                      872 E Oak St Sequim WA 98382    480-354-6972
