Critics have long derided the biblical account of the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea in one night. They say it could not have been done because the Red Sea is deep and wide and the bottom would be muddy.
Exodus 2:15 - Moses fled from
Pharaoh and went to live in Midian.
Midian is clearly located South of the Sinai peninsula and is part of Saudi Arabia (across an arm of the Red Sea) and has been so known since biblical times - see Galations 4:25.
Exodus 3:1 - Moses was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the Priest of Midian. He led his flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, The mountain of God.
Exodus 3:12 - And God said, "I will be with you and this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship GOD on this mountain (still in Midian)
Exodus 12:37 They journeyed from Ramses to Succoth (no doubt picking up people as they went) There were about six Hundred thousand men on foot besides women and children. (at least two million souls)
In the 8th century, the Holy Roman emperor Justinian declared a mountain on the Sinai peninsula to be "mount Sinai", the mountain of GOD where the ten commandments were given. On what authority? - Apparently emperor perogative. A Monastery was built there, later named "St Catherines". But, that mountain in no way fits the biblical location or description.
A wide strip along the East bank of the Red Sea is wide and smooth enough for an army of 2 million plus people to transit and appears to be the "desert road toward the Red Sea" mentioned in Exodus 13:18.
This road was the ancient trade
route, but the trade route curved East and North because at the straits
of Teran, the sea route ends abruptly when it encounters some high mountains
extending right to the water. It is here that an arm of the Red Sea
extends North and East to Ezion Geber. (See map)
Route of fleeing Israelis in Red
It was here that GOD set a trap
for the Egyptians, using the Israelis as bait.
Exodus 14:1-4 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon . . . . But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know I am the Lord. So, the Israelites did this.
The bible goes on to tell how the sea was parted and the Israelites walked across it. The Egyptians tried to follow but the sea swept them all away. There is a 500 yard wide coral reef precisely at that point which allowed two million+ people to cross with their animals in a single night (about 2 miles), once GOD provided an East wind that temporarily exposed that reef. This is no ordinary reef. It is so near the surface, it is visible on satelite imagery and it is flat on top. So, in fact god prepared a highway for them to cross on.
GOD does not do things half way. He arranged for Moses to be brought up in Pharaoh's household with his natural mother as his nurse. From his parents, he learned Israelite teachings about GOD and in Pharaoh's house he got the best conventional education available at that time. GOD then sent him to spend 40 years in the Arabian desert so that he learned about living and surviving in it and herding sheep was excellent training for herding people. After all that, at 80 years of age, he began his life work to lead the people out of Egypt. GOD does not do things half way. He had prepared a route for them to escape the Egyptians. The Sinai Peninsula was Egyptian territory and it would have been suicidal for them to remain on it.
Exodus 19:1 In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt - on the very day they came to the desert of Sinai . . . . and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.
Note: One of the stories doubters frequently throw out is that "Red Sea" is really some swamps called "the Reed Sea", located where Egypt meets the desert - only a two or three day walk from their homes. This is a rediculous idea - made more so by the biblical statement that it was the third month out before they reach Sinai.
The sinai peninsula was clearly Egyptian territory and was actively used by them, mined as a source of precious metals and copper. For the Israelites to remain on it would have been suicidal. The bible clearly states that they moved both day and night to get away from the Egyptians.
Exodus 19:18 Mount Sinai was
covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The
smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace.

Emperor Justinian's pick of a more convenient mountain on the Sinai peninsula is a fraud. Archeologists searched for years and found nothing to substantiate Justinian's pronouncement.
