About the Levy mess
What about Levys? Shouldn't everybody vote for them?
After all, isn't everyone "For Kids"? Shouldn't we have good education for all? So why all the beef about passing them?
First of all, some people need to understand that $ do not insure education excellence. Private schools typically operate on much smaller per student costs, yet typically also turn out much better student test scores.
Secondly, when the public says "NO" to a levy, there is a reason. Recently,
we have seen school districts spend money to put the same levy out for vote
twice, three times, even four times. What ever happened to the idea that
they should take what they can get and "make do" with it? If they can't
get $16 million, why not go for
15? It appears that the prevailing philosophy is, "you just have to push
harder". So, they try to make anyone who objects to the amount of the levy,
to be a bad guy who hates kids and wants them ignorant. After enough of
this pressure, the levy finally passes.
Should we do away with the levy system and get the legislature to just pile on more bucks so that they won't be necessary? I don't think so. The levy election is the only way people have of getting the attention of the professional educators. It is real democracy in action. Of course, the WEA hates democracy. They want it all, served to them on a unionized platter. (They have been repeatedly fined for illegal political activities)
School boards need to pay closer attention to what is being done with the public's money. Too much of it doesn't go to educate kids. Too much goes to hire assistants to the assistants for the school administrators - - and to fund vacations billed as "important meetings".
There needs to be a way for the state to Help parents who want their children to get top notch educations without them having to mortgage the futures to pay for it - - after they have paid their taxes to educate other people's children.
The Public Schools are getting a free ride on the private
and parochial schools - - and it needs to at least be limited. JMC
