That contrasts with my experience. I once wrote a LTE in which I mentioned the well known, well publicised fact that the first estimate of cost to remove the Elwha dams was $329 million. The park supt. (newly arrived in the community) was allowed to write a response in which he declared that the first estimate was only about $100 million.

A simple check of your old files on the subject could have shown that the $300 million plus figure was used for several years before the park service realized Congress would not go for the $300 million all at once and they would have to cut the figure down, then get the rest peicemeal. I was given no chance to correct the record and when I showed PG an old PDN statement showing the original figure, he just laughed.

If you want to talk about "Racism", Monica is the most vocal racist in Clallam County. She frequently writes letters which quote old Indian legends as "proof" and your newpaper accepts them. She once claimed that gov't workers deliberately gave the Indians blankets infected with smallpox in order to kill them. Paul cited an Indian website as the source. Never mind that this is an old, long discredited legend which defies logic, since smallpox killed far more white people than Indians and was a much feared disease clear into the early 20th century (My mother was born in 1902 and she had it as a child).

The worst part is that this is part of a campaign to get the state to "gift" the tribe the valuable 22 acres of land on the waterfront -- on which they will no doubt build a casino. Apparently your newspaper is backing that idea.
