Back in the dark ages, when I was in school, I was taught that the genius
of
science was that when a scientist claimed he had made a new discovery,
he had to provide other scientists with the details of his experiment
that they
could then follow and come out with the same results. This was
how science
was "proved" and without that, any allegations by scientists, no matter
how
logical and widely held, were still Theories and subject to
change and perhaps
refutation. Thus, by holding each other accountable, scientist
advanced the
actual knowledge base of mankind (though not inherited human
intellect).
Back in the real dark ages, the pope was the foremost political as well
as
religious figure of Europe and his statements were the "scientific
truth" of the
age. When upstarts like Copernicus and Gallileo claimed the earth
revolved
around the sun and other heretical stuff, the Pope used his political
power to
force them to recant and thus preserved his theories, but scientific
knowledge
didn't progress very much. (and some were burned at the stake)
Scientists Who Don't toe the political line
For info on Academics who don't toe the line, see Ben Stein's movie
But,if you think political power no longer trumps science, think
again
- - and read the attached piece out of the Washington Times..
. . . which
matches a bunch of other stuff I have been reading. Politicians
have declared
that the widely held theory that CO2produced
by human activity now trumps
that of volcanos, wild fire, decomposition
of carbon compounds, and farting.
And that there are drastic measures we
humans can and must take to stop the
resulting global heating which threatens
the destruction of the Earth. This
goes along with similar political determinations
that we humans are just the
product of various carbon compounds that
somehow took life and "evolved
into the brilliant (???) human species.
(nevermind the science of genetics
which is experimentally proven and is
not compatible with evolution) --
Junk Science at it's worst. Told
to get your mind off GOD. And, Fear
SELLS - BIGTIME!
And furthermore, any scientist who dares
to question these political-
science decisions, is a heretic and
must be subjected to the same
draconian measures (modern day equivalent,
of course) that the
middle ages popes used to silence those
who disagreed.
Am I dreaming, or are we reliving history
because we refuse to study
it and apply it to our present world?
