The Sierra Club  ~~~ What are they about??
When I sent an E-mail to the Sierra Club (via their website) asking why they were
working to destroy dams which hold back fresh water and allow it to recharge
acquifers, provide habitat for water fowl, fish and water mamals, irrigate farms
-  and to provide clean, cheap electrical power - the alternative to which usually
amounts to combustion of hydrocarbons,  their response was to ask, "navis
bermudez@sierraclub.org".  Well, a message to "navis" just gets you an error
response -- apparently, their "ain't no such person".

The fact is, The Sierra Club is not what it purports to be!!

Letter to the Sierra Club - Marv Chastain

I recently received a letter signed by Carl Pope, exec. Director of the Sierra Club,
urging me to join.  Following is my response to Mr. Pope. I doubt he ever read it,
but maybe some of his help did and  got a little different slant on the subject:

re: "Panthers"

I received the enclosed letter from you urging me to join your club. Enclosed was a cute picture of your
Florida Panthers" you say are threatened with extinction. I have good news for you. Since it has been
scientifically determined that so called "panthers" in Florida are actually the same species that is called
mountain lion, cougar, puma, and other things not printable, in various parts of the country, I wish
to contribute some new stock from the mess of what we call, cougars here on the Olympic Peninsula.
We have become overrun with these dangerous killers of livestock, pets, and sometimes people, since
you and some of your friends got ignorant Washington State city dwellers to pass an initiative to ban
dog hunting in this state.

If the state of Florida would like, we would be more than happy to ship you a bunch - if we can catch
them without employing dogs. State experts tell us that on average, each adult cougar kills 50 to 100
deer each year (and doesn't even buy a license, as two legged hunters must do). Hence, every one
of these critters we can dispose of will spare the lives of a bunch of our deer which are also becoming
"endangered". (see marvchastain.com for some local particulars)

Bald Eagles:

We also have plenty of these birds here on the peninsula. They have never been in short supply here.

Olympic Mountain Goats:

That is one species that is in very short supply here. The National Park Service massacred most of
them a few years ago - partly at the insistence of your organization that they weren't native (a claim not
yet proven and clearly not relevent). [see marvchastain.com/goat]

Trumpeter Swans:

Another species in very short supply here and to become even shorter once the NPS gets through
destroying their habitat in Lake Aldwell and Lake Mills - again something you folks have been
promoting. A few years ago, Chris Legeros, reporter for KIRO, (channel 7 Seattle), called me
to tell me he was on his way over here to videotape the trumpeter Swans in Lake Aldwell. About
an hour later, he called again to tell me someone from the station management had called the
Sierra Club and been told to call Chris back, which they did. If you guys are for wildlife,
why would you not want video of these rare, gorgeous birds to be aired? ???????

Trees:

You want me to contribute money so that you can persuade the government to lock up another
100 million acres in addition to what they already have. When the government locks up forests,
those forests become overcrowded with dead trees and bugs and become tinder boxes waiting
for lightning or human stupidity to set them afire. Didn't you see enough forest (as well as houses
and people) go up in smoke last summer? You want more of that? You say all of this helps wildlife,
. I don't see how being incinerated helps wildlife - please explain.
See www marvchastain.com/trees

A few years ago, the president of The Washington State Sierra Club who had been actively
working to prevent harvest of "old growth" trees in an Eastern Washington national forest,
purchased land privately that was immediately adjacent to that national forest and proceeded
to harvest the old trees on it for a nice profit.

These are some of the things that tell me the only green you are interested in is in my wallet -
- not in the natural environment.
